How do you know you have the right loan officer?

Updated: Oct 30, 2023

There are so many loan officers and mortgage brokers out there. How can you find the one that's going to be the most helpful and on your side? Here are five tips for choosing the right loan officer.

Finding the right loan officer can be a frustrating and confusing process. Takes these tips and make that overwhelming process seamless.

Tip 1: Responds Quickly

Are they responding to you within a reasonable amount of time?

What's a reasonable amount of time for a loan officer to respond to you? Here at Essex Mortgage, we strive to respond within 1 business day. If a loan officer is taking more than 2 business days to get back to you, it's likely they are either overworked or haven't made you a priority. Either way, make sure the loan officer you go with makes you feel like they are giving you the time of day necessary to get the loan you need.

Tip 2: Answers your Questions Thoroughly

Does the loan officer give you a precise answer to your question?

One of the things you are going to want to look for in a loan officer is someone who gives you a thorough and precise answer to any and all of your questions. If you're getting one word answers or answers that don't actually answer your question but skirt around the issue, you may want to look into getting a new loan officer. You deserve someone who takes the time to find the answers to your questions.

Tip 3: Has Good to Great Reviews

Have you checked the loan officer's Google reviews or Facebook page?

Is the loan officer someone who gets mostly good to great reviews saying how helpful and attentive they have been throughout the process? You want someone with experience and really good reviews. Now, there will rarely be anyone who has perfect reviews across the board. Sometimes, things don't go as planned and it's out of the loan officers hands, but for the most part, the loan officer should have very positive reviews. Also, check their Facebook page (or instagram or LinkedIn) to see how they interact with others. This could be indicative of how they will treat you.

Tip 4: Makes You a Priority

Does the loan officer make you feel like a priority or a nuisance?

If you feel like you are annoying the loan officer, it's time to get a new one. You shouldn't feel like you are an annoyance, no matter how many questions you have. It is the loan officer's job to help you with all of your questions even if they are the simplest of things. Getting a mortgage isn't something someone does on the daily so it's normal and expected to have questions and concerns. If the loan officer is annoyed by this, they aren't making you a priority. Find someone that makes you feel like you matter and you are worth their time.

Tip 5: Doesn't put Pressure on You

Are you feeling pressured into a certain loan type or into making a choice quickly?

While we hope the loan officer knows what they are doing and is trying to get you the best loan possible, it's also possible they are just trying to get this loan through quickly. Don't feel pressured into making any choice quickly. This is something you will have to live with and pay on for a while so make sure you're getting exactly what is right for you.
